Mel and I were married in 1966 and had two children, John and Michelle. We moved back to Daytona Beach, Fl. after Mel served in the Air Force. He became a firefighter, eventually becoming the fire mechanic, a job he dearly loved.
Mel retired in 1998, after suffering a heart attack while playing softball, his second love. Upon retiring, he worked for Ten Eight, continuing his work on fire engines for several surrounding counties.
How ironic he would suffer a fatal heart attack on the softball field. Dec. 6, 1999. I often had teased him about just that due to the many hours we spent at the ballfields. Our son, also a firefighter, continues to play with many of the original team members.
