After high school Becky moved to Florida to attend college. Anne Hoffman went with her. She met a boy there and they were married. She stayed in FL and worked in education. Before her death she was working at the capitol with a high ranking position in the State Department of Education. (She might have been head of a dept--not sure) . She mentioned at the time that she had worked campaigning for the governor at the time, and well, you know how that goes. She was a smart gal and worked hard. Becky knew what she wanted and went after it.

Becky had some sadness in her life. The death of her father hurt the family greatly and I think Becky in particular for some complex reasons.

Becky had goals and pushed for what she wanted. I knew her as a teenager and then reconnected with her a few times over the years. She was the same gal I knew from high school in many ways. I was very sad to lose her just about when we were about to see each other again. I believe it was 2004 or 2005--my memory is not clear on the date. I had a lot going on back then. I know the last phone conversation we had (which is very clear in my memory) I was still teaching college so it had to have been around that time. I was very sad to hear of her passing.

When we were classmates at McGuffey, the Brickels family lived in a house just across the street from Withrow Court. Her dad (John) was Athletic Director at M.U. at the time. Her brother Bo was a classmate of my brother Craig (Mcguffey '56). They had a little "summer house" in their backyard -really a screened-in patio-- where we'd spend many a summer afternoon playing cards and drinking cokes. Steffi Shellhouse was there too..Becky was always the perfect hostess.

Another memory from 4th or 5th grade: David Osborne, David Christman, Johhny Schumacher and I used to go swimming under the covered bridge on Corso road -not far from our house on Morning Sun Road. One time Becky joined us. She was a real tomboy then. It so happens no one brought swim suits, but the cool water was just too tempting. We all stripped down to our underwear, Becky included, and jumped right in. Somehow my mom came looking for us, came upon the scene and was SHOCKED! -SHOCKED! at our immodesty. Never mind the murky water and  the leaches; it was the co-ed nature of our near-naked swimming party that offended....sweet memory!

Slightly later, maybe 6th grade, Becky and I hosted a "Beatnik" party for our friends.  My brother was an SAE at M.U. at the time. He made the downstairs rec room of the frat house available to us over Christmas break. The Dobie Gillis Show was popular then, and Mayard the beatnik was an object of much fascination. We wore berets and sandals sunglasses, penciled  goatees on our chins with our moms' mascara brushes, snapped our fingers to the Kingston Trio and said "groovy" all night long...

That Becky: she was always up for an adventure!

I remember that Beatnik party - all of us dressed in black being incredibly cool! I remember going to Becky's to hang out in the summer. When we got really bored we would make prank calls ("Is your refigerator running?" and other classics. Apparently someone called the phone company to complain and they traced the call back to the Brickels number. Not too hard to figure out who was behind it all. That put an end to that little game!
